Ramadan Food Tips And Best Place To Travel

In this blog post, I am going to share exactly how you can continue eating healthy and keeping fit even after the Ramadan fasting.

The No.1 thing you need to be careful of is unhealthy snacking. That is, eating snacks that are high in sugar and calories in between their daily meals. A lot of people, like eating sugary and unhealthy snacks that will make them gain extra weight and increase belly fat.

Maybe yours is Sharwarma or that “Suya Pizza” sold at Domino, or that delicious Ice cream or chocolate velvet cake. And for some other, it’s a late night drinking of traditional food such as “Garri with Sugar, Groundnut and Milk”.

Unfortunately, these snacks are packed with sugar and will sabotage your weight loss. Irrespective of what your unhealthy snack is, you need to cut down on it for you to see a significant weight loss and to melt off your belly fat.

Instead of snacking on those junk foods, some healthier sweet snacks you can eat instead are:

1. Fruit Salad

2. 1 handful of mixed nuts ( e.g. cashew, groundnut, almond)

3. Diced Coconuts

4. Tiger Nuts (known as “aya”)

5. Garden Egg (you can eat as many of this as you want)

6. Walnut (Known as Awusa or Asala)

7. Moi Moi

8. Boiled Egg

9. Fruit Smoothies

10. Avocados

11. Moi Moi

12. Dried fruits e.g. dried mangoes, pineapples etc.

13. Watermelon etc.

14. Banana (1-2 pieces)

You have lots of options available to you. Make sure you eat them as snack in between meals whenever you are hungry.

Another snack I would love to mention is the Arabian Dates which I came across for the first time on my trip to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It was served in one of the hotels I was staying in downtown Dubai. These dates are rich in vitamin and iron and promote digestion and are known to lower bad cholesterol.

If you do not have Dates in your diet, I will advise you include it as they are readily available in any local Nigerian market or supermarket.

By the way, If you’ve never been to the beautiful city Of Dubai, this is one-holiday destination that I will encourage you to visit.

The Ramadan holiday is another opportunity to jet out of the country from Lagos to Dubai with the family on holiday.

Personally, I consider Dubai my favourite spot in the Arabian desert because of the many holiday attractions available to see and enjoy.

Luckily for us Nigerians, there are regular flight from Lagos to Dubai which means you can decide to go to this lovely city at any time convenient for you as there are many airlines flying this route.

If you are cost conscious, you can get the cheapest flight from Lagos to Dubai by planning ahead and checking cost on a travel comparison site like FNP travel.

During my last trip to this city, I visited various places that include the Burj Khalifa which is a 160-story skyscraper as well as the Palm Jumeirah which is an artificial island that has its own water park and beach.

Travelling to a place like this need not cost an arm and leg. There are cheap flights to Dubai available at an affordable cost especially if you are not the only one travelling.

I hope the tips I’ve shared above has been of great help. Do leave me a comment and let me know any of the snacks you like from my list above and do also get in touch if and when you do plan a trip to Dubai soon.

How To Lose Weight During Ramadan Fasting

If you are fasting for Ramadan and you want to use that opportunity to lose weight and burn fat in a healthy way then this article is for you. I want you to pay attention.

Here’s the exact method to follow to lose weight while fasting:

1. Eat The Right Amount Of Calories

Make sure that you eating less than 2,000 calories per day. Don’t worry, you don’t have to obsess over counting calories, but make sure you don’t overeat food.

Instead, eat small portions of healthy meals through the evening  and early morning (before fast starts at dawn)as it will keep your metabolism level adequate and also maintain a balanced blood sugar level.

2. Break Your Fast With Fat Burning Foods

Eat food low in carbohydrate, but with more protein and vegetables.
Let your meal contain the following healthy those of foods: Fish (e.g. mackerel, Salmon, Tilapia) and Chicken, Vegetables: Cabbage, Cucumber, Spinach (also known as “efo green”), Ugwu, “Ewedu”.

Other foods you can eat are ofada“/brown rice, “moi moi“, millet, semolina, wheat meal, “masa”, almond, cashew nut, eggs, skimmed milk, “ewedu etc

You can also eat fruits such as  watermelon, pineapple, oranges, banana etc. In The 30 Day Fat Loss Program, I did share fat burning foods that you can actually use to lose weight. The meals and recipe in this 30 Day Fat Loss Program can also be enjoyed during Ramadan.

3. Avoid Meals That Causes Weight Gain

I want you run as fast as your legs can carry you. Yes, Run…away from foods like sugar, white bread, white rice, ice cream, sweets, cakes, muffins, soda, soft drinks. You have to restrain yourself.

Its ok for you to eat it once a week, but let it be a small portion. Whatever you do, DO NOT indulge yourself. Otherwise, you will put the weight back on. Remember, Ramadan is about self-restriction.

4. Eliminate Thirst

Make sure you drink at least 1 litre of water. When you drink water, ensure you do this slowly and don’t guzzle it down.

When you’ve been fasting all day, guzzling water down your throat can make your stomach feel tight for a moment. We don’t want that.

Also, avoid drinking any liquid that will cause you to become more thirsty. I am talking about drinks such as Coke, Orange Juice, Tea etc

5. Exercise Your Body To Become Fit!

During the day, you can do 15 – 20 minutes light exercise such as walking. Reserve the high-intensity workout for the night time just before you break your fast or after.

When you exercise your body, you will burn a lot more calories. If you absolutely want to do your exercise after you break your fast, ensure you leave at least 2 – 3 hours for your meals to digest before engaging in exercise.

So that’s it for today. If you follow the above tips that I have shared with you over the Ramadan period, then you would lose weight off your body.

As usual, kindly leave your comments and questions in the comment form below and I’ll respond to them.

Happy Healthy Ramadan!

How To Prepare Green Smoothie

Have you ever tried green smoothie?

It’s one of the drinks I take once in a while for breakfast for a healthy weight loss journey.

Many people don’t like when their drink has green colour.

I think their fear is that It makes it look like the green drink won’t be sweet or that it will taste sour or bitter.

But you see the Green Drink in this picture actually taste very nice. It has a sweet creamy taste. It is packed with lots of nutrients and is very low in calories.

How To Prepare Green Smoothie

1 Apple (Sliced or Diced)

1/2 cucumber (diced)

1 Banana (peeled)

2 handful of grapes (preferably green)

1 handful of baby leaf spinach

Dice all the fruits and vegetable ingredients above into smaller pieces and put them into a blender/juicer. Personally, I use a Nutribullet blender. But any blender or Juicer is fine.

Add half cup of water to the blender and then blend the entire mixture until it becomes very smooth.

Pour into a cup and add ice to chill or refridegrate before drinking.

Question: Do you like smoothie? And what’s your favourite?

What To Do When You Eat Junks On Your Weight Loss Journey

The other day, I was checking up on one of my weight loss client on WhatsApp...

Every week, I always get in touch to monitor their progress and to make them accountable on their weight loss journey.

And my message was simple..."How is Your Weight Loss Journey Going?"

Here's her exact response:

"Coach Olu, A family friend visited me from the USA and brought lots of Chocolate, so I ate a lot of it.

I have broken my weight loss journey, so I am going to start again next Monday"

This same thing is what happens to a lot of people who are trying to lose weight to get their best ever body.

They start eating clean and 4-5 days into their journey, they somehow ate some junk food and then say..."I've broken my journey, so I am going to start again next week".

If you run your weight loss journey with this kind of attitude, you will just be in an endless cycle of starting and stopping on a weekly basis.

There will be times when you will fall during your weight loss journey. That is why you are human.

Here's Exactly What To Do!

Simply get back on track and start eating healthy immediately after this happens. Continue from where you stopped.  Instead of stopping your journey and then telling yourself you will start again next week.

You ate Sneakers Chocolate, drank 5 bottles of Coke and topped it up with Cake?

So What?

Just get back on track the following day and continue eating healthy again! Don't postpone your weight loss simply because you derailed for one day.

Trust your weight loss process. Stay focused and remember why you started in the first place. I am Coach Olu and my goal is to help you lose weight and help you get back your own amazing body.

Please leave me a comment if you resonate with this same thing I've just said. Thanks.

If you are reading this right now, and you know you are yet to sign up for one of my weight loss program..

The question is, What is Stopping You?

This is a new month. Start your weight loss journey today by getting one of my weight loss program below:

17 Healthy Nigerian Foods That Kills Belly Fat!

I want to talk about an issue that is actually a thorn in the flesh of a lot of people. Maybe you or someone you know is also having this same problem.

I assure you, this is going to help you.

If you or someone you know is having a HARD time shedding fat despite eating just one meal or starving yourself daily, then I want you to read this write-up very well and digest it.

When you undergo a starvation diet, and you are not seeing result or you see result for few days and then the fat comes back, there are various factors that could be responsible for it BUT the One I want to talk about in this mail is the one that has to do with your "Nutrition".

Here is a DEEP truth for you:

Your body is designed to withstand and adapt to any inconvenient situation or environment it finds itself.

If you ask the average person (and this could be you too) the best way to burn fat, the first advice they give is: Go on a Diet by eating just 1 Meal Per Day!

Not only is this advice common, its sometimes being propagated by friends, partners, family members, and extended families who will see you at social functions, giving you a sneer eye and telling you exactly how many times you should be eating daily etc.

It's sad that some fitness instructors as well are even propagating these types of starvation diets. I see a lot of diets with various different names like:

  • Warrior Diet
  •  South Beach Diet
  • Indomie Diet (Eating one indomie per day!)
  • Atkins Diet
  • Pasta Chocolate Diet
  • Chicken Soup Diet (Eating thrice a day!)
  • Zen Diet Etc!

The common relationships between all these diets are:

  1. Restriction from eating at least three meals per day.
  2. Restrict you to one type of food. e.g.Indomie or Chicken Soup Diet
  3. Promises a quick Weight Loss From Starvation.
  4. Strictly limit your intake of fat etc.

If you or someone you know are currently on this type of diet, you are GREATLY exposing yourself to a Risk that will not
only seriously affect your health, but the fat you shed temporarily will Come Back!

Let me explain this a little further
by telling you a bit of Biology...

For those of us who did "sciences" in secondary school, you will be familiar with this when I am done.

The human body was designed by God to respond to stimulus. When a mosquito stings you, or a sharp needle goes through your skin, your body's sensory receptor, sends a message to your brain that something dangerous is going through your skin, and then your brain tells itself that there is pain.

That is when you quickly feel a sharp sting and REACT to that pain.

It's the same thing with FEAR.

Have you noticed that when you face FEAR (it could be fear of anything....), your breathing speeds up, your heart races and your muscles tighten? Your brain reacts to a stimulus by releasing chemicals that causes your heart beat to increase.

In the same way that your body responds to Pain, Fear and other conditions that are altered by your environment, so also is exactly how your body responds when you go on a starvation diet.

Your body DOES NOT see it as a diet. Your body actually start to think that there is lack of food (famine)...and then it starts going into what is referred to as "survival or starvation mode".

Survival mode is part of your body's survival mechanism and what it does is:

  •  It slows down your body metabolism and try to save as much energy as it can.
  • Breaks down your body muscle (Your body starts using your muscles for energy)

If you skip a day of eating, your body is not going to freak out and slow down your metabolism rightaway. Starvation mode usually kicks in after a continuous fasting or food intake restriction usually between 3 - 5 days.

Truth is...when you starve yourself,
You Will Loose Weight!

The starvation diet will produce quick weight loss.

But since you can't eat chicken soup or Indomie Noodles once in a day all your life, your starvation diet will come to an end at a point.

And once you go back to eating normal food, your body that's been in starvation mode....instantly discover a supply of food...and starts processing sugar and it up as fat in your fat storage cell again because it thinks that this is a one time opportunity to store before you go into starvation mode again.

And for those who go ON and OFF starvation diet, they continue in this vicious circle of losing fat and then piling it back on....

Can you see that if you want to permanently lose body fat and get fit and healthy, going on a starvation diet is not the way to do it.

What you need to do is combine a "Fat Loss Nutrition plan" With a "Fat Loss Excercise routine"

When you eat the RIGHT foods and you engage in portion control  you will achieve what is called a Calorie deficit.

What is a calorie deficit?

A calorie deficit occurs when the amount of fat burned is more than the calorie supplied by the food you eat, and the result is fat loss.

In plain language, when you eat 2,000 calories of food a day and your body burns 2,500 calories, that is extra 500 calories is burn from the excess fat in your body.

So for us to lose weight, we must eat in such a way that our body continues to burn extra calories every day while we lose weight over a period of time.

And we can do this by eating foods that will reduce the level of insulin that is being produced in our body.

These foods are foods that contain complex carbohydrates (rich in fiber  vitamins & minerals), vegetables (contains micro-nutrients that boost immune system) and plant based proteins etc. These types of food reduces the secretion of insulin (that fat storing hormone) in your body.

And....FINALLY without wasting time...

The 17 Nigerian Foods That Helps You Burn Fat
